Challenge – €1000/month from Google AdSense

As I am now the maker of my own fortune, I have set myself some goals that I want to achieve with my websites. One of them is the €1,000 profit per month from Google AdSense ads.

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is a Google-powered programme that allows website owners to place image, text, video or interactive multimedia ads on their websites, tailored to the visitors of that particular website. These advertisements are managed, administered and maintained by Google with the permission of the website owner.

In my experience, Google AdSense is the most annoying ad for any website visitor, but for website owners it is the most passive source of income. It’s so easy to place AdSense ads on a website that it literally takes just a few clicks. Of course, these ads can be optimised manually, but you can trust Google’s algorithms and let Google’s bots do the optimisation.

I have chosen the second option – I have placed Google AdSense code on some of my websites and let it figure out how to serve ads to my website visitors more effectively. These ads are tailored to each individual visitor – you already know that if you search for a desk, for example, on Google, those desks will then follow you to other websites.

How much do I currently earn from Google AdSense?

This year, my average monthly earnings on the AdSense platform have been 171.95€. In the best month it was €205.43 and in the worst just under €140.

You must be thinking – pfft, 170 euros… In fact, this is probably the easiest €170 I have received. Every month, Google deposits €170 into my bank account. It’s cool to get money from Google!

Of course, this is not the only advertising tool that generates revenue for my websites. There are more than 5!

I have been working with AdSense since 2018. May 2011. In the first month my income was exactly 0.79€! It is now exactly three years later and I have already exceeded €200 profit in one month.

Don’t you think this is great progress?

Of course, it is possible to generate as much as €1,000 and €10,000 per month with AdSense over three years, but then it should be your priority. At no point in time has increasing the profit from AdSense ads been a priority for me, which is why revenue growth has been very slow.

I can’t really explain the sudden jump from ~70€/month to 200€+, because my website traffic didn’t increase so drastically in those months. It seems that Google itself has discovered how to place ads more effectively on my websites.

My AdSense income statistics

If we look at my AdSense income in detail, we can see that the total profit is 2408.68€. If we divide this amount over 36 months, the average is €66.90 per month.

In total, there have been 718,000 page views, displaying almost 2.5 million ads.

Almost 9000 clicks – 250 clicks per month on average (~8 clicks per day).

Per click, the average profit was 0.27€, which is very high, but not surprising as I am in the “how to make money online” industry.

Digging even deeper into the data, the next view worth looking at is the performance of each website.

I have AdSense ads on two websites – epelna.com (formerly epelna.lv) and onlinemoneyspy.com. Onlinemoneyspy.com is basically the English version of epelna.com with slightly adapted content for a global audience. You may have noticed that epelna.lv has been epelna.com for a while, so the statistics for the new site are very modest.

From the table we can see that onlinemoneyspy.com (0.50€) has more than twice the revenue per click of epelna.lv (0.22€). This is a revelation for me, as I had not looked into this data before. What we can conclude from this is that if I want to increase my AdSense income, I need to work on increasing traffic to onlinemoneyspy.com.

What does AdSense revenue depend on?

AdSense revenues depend on a wide range of factors. On their own website, there is a tool that can give you a very rough estimate of the potential income you can earn if you place Adsense ads on your website – the AdSense Profit Calculator.

On my websites, the determining factor for such a sharp difference in pay-per-click is the difference in audience. Epelna.com’s main target audience is Latvia, while Onlinemoneyspy.com’s audience is global and English-speaking.

The following factors affect AdSense revenue:

  • Website traffic – how many users visit your website each month?
  • Cost per click (CPC) – how much do you get on average per click?
  • Click to Display Ratio (CTR) – how often do visitors click on your ads?
  • Website theme – what is the theme of your website? For example, “how to make money online” pages will show ads with higher pay-per-click than pages about gardening.
  • Website language – e.g. ads in English will be more expensive than ads in Latvian

These are, in my opinion, the most important factors that affect your AdSense earnings. News sites and forums that have a very high monthly website traffic are clearly the ones that generate the most revenue from AdSense.

How do I plan to reach my goal of €1000 profit per month from AdSense?

I would like to say that I have already laid a strong foundation for achieving this goal. I have websites and those websites have visitors – the formula for AdSense profit.

All I need to do now is to increase the number of visitors to my websites.

If I currently have 10 000 – 12 000 visitors per month on both websites, I need to aim for around 60 000 visitors per month to reach € 1 000 income from the AdSense platform. These 60 000 visits should certainly not be used as a benchmark to start earning €1000 per month, because as we have already established in the course of this article, these figures only apply to my websites.

At the moment I have already started working on new content for onlinemoneyspy.com, which, for AdSense, certainly has much more potential than epelna.com.

The target is to reach 50 000 visitors per month within one year. I am already very familiar with the means by which this can be achieved. And it’s no secret – quality content that appears in Google’s organic results is the best and fastest way to do that.

Why have I set myself this goal?

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Google AdSense ads are the most “passive” way to make money from your website. Enter the code on your website and see how much you’ve earned tomorrow. This type of advertising is not suitable for all types of websites, however, as, for example, placing AdSense ads on an online shop where you sell your products would be unprofessional and would scare away your potential customers. This type of ad is well suited for blog, news portal, forum type pages.

I also want to increase traffic to my websites so that I can start earning more from the affiliate marketing offers on my websites. So this target of €1000/month from AdSense is great in itself, but also because by reaching it I will have significantly increased my income from other monetisation tools.

How can you start making money online with Google AdSense?

I trust that by reading this article you have realised that to make money with Google AdSense you need to have your own website (ideally a blog, portal or forum). Websites are not the only way to make money with AdSense, however, as the platform is also at the heart of YouTube video monetisation.

It’s easy to register and get a code to put on your website. Visit the AdSense homepage to start earning from Google Ads on your website today.

Three reasons why I (and Google) recommend placing ads on your website:

The opportunity to monetize your website – Millions of advertisers are competing for advertising space on your website. This means more revenue, more relevant ads shown to users and more ad space filled.

Ads are optimised for all devices – Google will optimise the size of your ad units itself, automatically adjusting them for display on computers or mobile devices, making them more likely to be seen and clicked on.

Save time – Add just one code to your website and Google will automatically serve ads tailored to your site layout, saving you the time you’d have to spend manually placing each ad.
