Clever Roland!
But if we are serious, it is irrefutably true. I am very grateful that I decided to learn how to make websites when I was at university, because this skill now allows me to be financially free.
As this article says, I’ll show you how I build my WordPress websites on Cloudways hosting. It’s really simple and you can do it too!
In this step-by-step tutorial, you will see how a new WordPress website is created with pictures!
Why WordPress Content Management System (CMS)?
WordPress is the world’s most popular content management system, used to power small blogs, underpin millions of business websites and power small to medium-sized online shops.
All of my 20 or so websites are built on WordPress CMS and I can’t say a bad word about this content management system. There are thousands of ready-made themes to choose from for every need. My favourite WordPress theme is definitely Divi. The same goes for plugins, whatever you come up with, you can find it in free or paid versions.
Google is full of tutorials and answers to questions related to the WordPress content management system. If you’re having trouble, typing your problem into Google will 90% of the time answer your questions.
Why CloudWays hosting?
I’ve tried at least five hosting providers, but CloudWays without options is my favourite! This hosting is cheap, fast, very easy to understand and has great customer service.
There have been several times when I’ve broken something on the board, but it’s always been fixed quickly by Live Chat staff who really dig into the problem and find solutions immediately.
The cheapest cloud hosting plan on the CloudWays platform will cost you $10, but it will provide lightning speed for up to 10+ of your WordPress websites.
Personally, I have about 25 WordPress websites stored on the CloudWays platform. I use one DigitalOcean cloud with 1GB RAM and one DigitalOcean cloud with 4GB RAM to run these websites.
How much does it cost to build and maintain my own WordPress website?
If you want your own WordPress website, the minimum cost will be:
- Cloudways hosting platform 1GB DigitalOcean server – 10$ per month/120$ per year;
- WordPress website – free;
- Domain name – 10-20$ per year.
So, you should expect to pay at least $130 to maintain one WordPress website for a year.
It all starts to become more profitable when you host multiple websites on the same hosting!
How to build your WordPress website on Clouways hosting
Let’s get started on your WordPress website!
Step #1 – Open your Cloudways hosting account
The first thing you need to do is open a new account on the Cloudways hosting platform.
Hosting is where your WordPress website will be stored. Hosting is a paid service and CloudWays’ cheapest offer is $10.
Click the button below to get a 3-day free trial on the CloudWays hosting platform!
Fill in all fields and click “START FREE”
After registration, you will receive a confirmation email asking you to click on the “activate account” button.
Step #2 – Choose the right cloud hosting plan for your project
In this step you will need to give a name to your first website, or “Application” as CloudWays calls it, as well as a name to the server.
You will also need to select the type of application – In this field, select WordPress Version 5.8
CloudWays hosting platform offers 5 servers – DigitalOcean, linode, VULTR, aws and Google CloudPlatform. All of these servers are quite similar and will keep your website up and running.
I have had great experience with DigitalOcean, which is also the cheapest.
I would also recommend you choose a DigitalOcean server. If you only want to host one website, a 1GB server will be perfectly adequate at a cost of $10 per month. From experience, you can store up to 10 simple websites on this server.
If your websites will see an increase in traffic, or you want to host a larger project such as an online shop with a lot of traffic, you can choose 2GN or 4GB servers right away.
If resources get too low, you can get a more powerful server in 10 minutes!
Step #3 – Access your server’s FTP and your WordPress website’s Admin Panel
In the top menu, you will have access to both the Servers section and the Applications or websites section.
In the server section you will be able to find the FTP access details under the heading “Master credentials”.
In the left-hand menu you will find the “Monitoring” or server monitoring section, where you can view statistics.
Under “Vertical Scaling” you can increase the capacity of the server – if it starts to get too small.
In the Applications section you will see all your applications – in this case you will only see your new WordPress website.
In the application panel, you will be able to find all the information about the application – access data, domain information, SSL certificate information, etc.
Every WordPress website project will be initially given an address like this: https://wordpress-662814-2167445.cloudwaysapps.com/
To replace this address with your own Domain Name, you will need to visit the “Domain Management” section and enter your domain name.
Don’t forget to change the A records in the DNS section with your Domain Name Provider. You will find the IP address in the “Access Details” section.
Step #3 – Start editing your WordPress website
Did you do all these things:
- Set up your own server
- Created your own WordPress app
- Have added a domain name
- SSL certificate added
If yes, you are ready to start editing your first WordPress website!
Your website will initially look like this. You can quickly fix this in your WordPress Admin panel.
If you want the Admin panel to be in Latvian, go to Settings>General>Site Language.
Before starting work, I recommend you visit the Plugins section of>Add New and add the following plugins:
- Classic Editor – a plugin to make it easier to add and edit messages
- The SEO Framework – an SEO plugin that I use on all my websites. Simple and effective!
- Insert Headers and Footers – if your chosen theme does not offer fields to insert, for example, Google Analytics code, this plugin will solve the problem.
- Shortcodes Ultimate – this plugin will allow you to add many useful elements to your pages and posts, such as buttons, insights, notes, etc.
- Contact Form 7 – if you want to include a contact form on your page, this plugin will provide it.
- WP Mail SMTP by WPForms – Connect your WordPress site to your email with this plugin.
- Elementor – if you want to create more complex pages, the free version of Elementor can do great things!
- Loco Translate – if you want to translate your website into several languages, this is the plugin for you!
- Pretty Links – if you want to host affiliate marketing links, this plugin will make them look much better!
- Hustle – if you want to add pop-up or slide-in windows to your page, this plugin is the way to go!
If you want to add a new theme that will give your WordPress website a different look, go to Appearance>Themes and choose from 10 000+ themes.
If you want to add a new Blog entry, click on Posts>Add New.
If you want to create a new page, click on Pages>Add New.
Summary
Did it sound complicated? I’ve built 50+ websites this way, so it all seems simple and obvious to me. But I can imagine the excitement of building my first WordPress website!
I’m pretty sure there’s no easier way to get your own hosting and your own WordPress website. The CloudWays platform is absolutely simple – it’s designed to get you what you need in the least amount of time.
Everything new takes some adaptation time – the same with WordPress. I think this platform is as easy or difficult as MS Powerpoint.
With themes like Divi, you’ll be able to build your own websites with Drag & Drop-style website building tools that let you build a website like you’re building lego bricks.
